Lime Paint Finishes
Telling manufacture a range of natural lime mortar products for various applications including mortar, plaster, render, screeds and concretes, together with stabilisation and consolidation grouts, mesh reinforcement and lime paints and finishes. The natural hydraulic lime products are manufactured using a modern day manufacturing process which replicates the strength, porosity, adhesion and flexibility of historic mortars. the lime paint systems consist of primer coats for mineral or synthetic backgrounds and natural hydraulic lime washes and Corical Lime Putty Paints.

Lime paint finishes
For painting of Unilit plasters and renders and application over existing stable lime plaster and render, stable areas of limewash and brick and stone masonry, we recommend the use of Corical Lime paint, Unilit 15 P1 lime wash or Unilit 400 lime wash to maintain the high degree of vapour permeability and ensure the compatibility of the paint with the substrate. A Unilit 15 P1 slurry coat, or skim coat, is recommended as a primer coat for Corical Lime Paint for mineral substrates where a high level of damp or salts are prevalent or expected, for application over cement or concrete substrates and for friable areas of plaster, render and masonry to stabilise the background, allow application over damp substrates, and provide a salt containment layer while the Lime paint cures. For internal application over gypsum plaster, and synthetic water based paint we recommend the use of Corifondo Primer Coat.


Corical Lime Paint
Corical lime paints are produced using very mature lime putty, fine quartz marble dust and natural earth ochre pigments which are inert, UV resistant and do not leach out or dust. The addition of crushed marble dust makes the Corical thicker, requiring only 2 – 3 coats, and harder wearing than traditional limewash, giving a durability of between 5 and 12 years externally, depending on the exposure of the site. This greatly reduces the future maintenance costs compared with limewash, which requires regular recoating and several coats. Lime paints have natural anti-fungal, bactericidal and disinfectant properties and good resistance against acid rain.

They are designed for use on mineral backgrounds such as lime plasterings, lime paint, brick and stone and are particularly suitable for use in the restoration of historical buildings and structures, and are fully compatible with the application of Unilit Natural Hydraulic Lime mortars, plasters and renders and will maintain the high degree of vapour permeability of lime structures and Unilit plaster and render, while providing additional weatherproofing. They can also be applied to modern materials and backgrounds that have previously been treated with a contemporary or synthetic paint (in these cases, an extra, stabilising coat of Corifondo primer coat has to be applied). A wide variety of paint effects can be achieved using Corical Lime Paint, including colour washes and by varying the dilution, number of coats or by using more than one colour.

We recommend the removal of all areas of oil based paint, highly elastic plastic paints, and synthetic water based paint prior to the application of Corical to ensure a mineral bond is achieved to the substrate, any risk of detachment sue to the incompatibility of the existing paint is removed and the vapour permeability of the background is maximised. For internal application over gypsum plaster, and synthetic water based paint we recommend the use of Corifondo Lime Sealer. Please consult our Technical Services Department prior to application over existing paint.

Corical lime paint is recommended for use with the Unilit system and is fully compatible, maintaining the vapour permeability of the render or plaster while providing additional weatherproofing. It is usual to apply a minimum of 2 to 3 coats of Corical Lime Paint, by brush or roller, with the first being diluted by 30% and the second (and third if required) by 10% with water or applied neat. Greater dilution of paint results in an increase in the number of coats required.

Preparation:
The substrate must be free from all traces of oil or grease. In case of doubt regarding the substrate please contact our Technical Services Department. Brush down old flaking or unstable substrates and areas of synthetic or modern paint. Friable or salt laden mineral backgrounds can be primed and stabilised using a Unilit 15 P1 slurry coat. Synthetic coatings or friable areas of modern existing paint should be primed with Corifondo lime sealer. In these cases a coat of Corifondo is to be applied, diluted 50 to 100% by water, depending on the absorption of the substrate. Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C or above 30°C, or in direct sunshine or where excessive drying winds are expected.

Initial coats:
Apply Unilit 15P1 primer coat or Corifondo Primer Coat by brush if required. Seek advice from Telling.
Apply 1 – 2 coats of Corical Lime Paint by brush or roller, diluting first coat 30% with water and second coat 10% with water, if required.
Finishing coats: Apply single coat of Corical L:ime Paint by brush or roller, either neat or diluted with 10% water.


Unilit 15 P1 Primer & Limewash
A fine bonding layer based on natural hydraulic lime and appropriate additional aggregates, designed to function within the Unilit system as a bonding bridge between the weak substrate (old lime plastering, reinforced concrete, old masonry, etc.) and the mortar/paint. Substrates of reinforced concrete must be treated with a layer of Unilit 15 before applying finishing mortars Unilit 200, 300, or 400. Unilit 15 can also be used as a preparatory treatment for completely saturated backgrounds and will not impair the permeability of the wall.

Unilit 15/P1 is designed as a lime wash or slurry/primer coat for lime paint and is applied in a slurry layer using a brush. Unilit 15 P1 can also be used as a bonding and/or finishing layer it is applied in a 2-4 mm layer by trowel.

For application of hydraulic lime slurry coats or Corical Lime Paint where background surfaces are excessively salt laden, damp or friable, or for application over cementitious substrates, a Unilit 15 P1 primer layer is recommended to ensure the optimum bond to the substrate and to provide a key for subsequent layers of paint. Unilit 15 P1 can be applied as a decorative limewash finish and is beige in colour, or can be applied as a primer for Unilit 400 limewash or Corical Lime Paint.

Preparation:
The substrate must be free from all traces of oil or grease. In case of doubt regarding the substrate please contact our Technical Services Department. Existing paint coatings should be removed to allow a mineral bond with the background. The background should be thoroughly brushed to clean away salts and other loose deposits. Where the substrate is excessively dry it should be dampened down prior to application. The mortar remains workable for 2-3 hours with a drying period of 24 to 48 hours.

Application:
Unilit 15 P1 can be applied as a decorative slurry coat / lime wash, or can be applied as a primer and stabilising layer for Unilit 400 lime wash or Corical Lime Paint. Where applied as a slurry coat water is gradually added to allow application by brush, generally 0.24l/kg or 7.2litres per 30 kg bag are required, mechanically mixed for 3 to 4 minutes, the proportion of water to be added is dependent on the required effect. Unilit 15 P1 can be applied to follow the contours of plaster, render or masonry, and is beige in colour. Unilit 15 P1 can also be applied to damp or friable backgrounds prior to decoration with Corical Lime Paint or Unilit 400 lime wash. Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C or above 30°C, or in direct sunshine or where excessive drying winds are expected.


Corifondo Primer Coat
Corifondo primer coat – A vapour-permeable primer coat designed for unstable and synthetic base surfaces, such as cement based substrates, plasterboard systems and synthetic paints. The product will make dusty base surfaces sound and will give the paint or top coats a more uniform effect due to a more even absorption of water.

Standard colour: Milky white, but can be tinted with Coridecor dyes (Stabilcori) – contact Telling for details.

Unilit 400 Limewash
For application over friable or unstable surfaces we recommend the application of Unilit 15 P1 as a base coat. Unilit 400 finishes are supplied in 12 colours, produced using natural earth ochre pigments, which are UV resistant and do not leach out. Unilit 400 is a natural hydraulic lime product and therefore will set on damp and salt laden backgrounds without detriment. Unilit 400 through coloured, fine (granular size 0.7mm) limewash slurry is mixed and applied as for Unilit 15 P1. Two coats may be required depending on the required aesthetic effect.

Corisilk – Silicate Mineral Paint
Corisilk is a non skim forming, pigmented mineral paint, which works by absorption in to the substrate and penetrates deep into porous background surfaces, reacting chemically (crystallisation/silicification), forming an insoluble part of the background surface. Corisilk is very vapour permeable maintaining the breathability of the structure, has a natural, inorganic structure and prevents the formation of mould and bacteria.

The intrinsic properties of Corisilk make the product highly resistant to air pollution and suitable for application in any climate – even the harshest. The mineral appearance makes Corisilk suitable for use in new and historic centres, on new, old or reconstructed buildings. Corisilk is odourless and non-allergenic.
Corisilk is applied to solid and porous background surfaces, seasoned, clean, dry plaster, exposed brickwork, insulating bricks and blocks, and surfaces free from polluting substances, oil and grease.

Corisilk is applied by brush in temperatures between 5oC and 35oC. Do not apply in high winds or direct sunlight.

Priming with Fondosilk stabiliser is recommended where the background is dry or particularly absorbent and where varying degrees of background absorption are evident. Fondosilk is a ready to use 1 coat primer applied by brush. In high temperatures and where the primer is dry, the background should be lightly dampened, using a low pressure spray, to control suction, before applying the first coat of Corisilk.

For the first coat of Corisilk, applied by brush, Corisilk should first be mixed with 20% Fondosilk and then diluted with 50% to 100% water depending on the absorption of the background surface and on the atmospheric conditions.

The second coat of Corisilk is diluted only with water from 50% to 100%, again depending on the background and conditions, and applied by brush.
