Telling Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortars.
Telling Lime Products manufacture and are distributors for a range of natural lime mortar products for various applications, together with stabilisation and consolidation grouts, mesh reinforcement and lime paints and finishes. Unilit natural hydraulic lime mortars replicate the vapour permeability, strength, porosity, adhesion and flexibility of historic mortars. The natural hydraulic lime products are manufactured using a modern day manufacturing process and are guaranteed against failure for 10 years and are warranted against defect under a professional indemnity insurance.

Unilit mortars can be produced pre-mixed or site prepared. The Unilit premixed range allows for selection of an appropriate mortar in terms of performance, colour (can be coloured using natural earth ochre pigment), aggregate size/texture, mortar joint size, and ease of application, and can be applied manually or pumped and applied mechanically by injection, spray. Where a site prepared mortar is required we recommend the use of Unilit Fen XA natural hydraulic lime and sand of approved grade. Unilit Fen XA is a neutral pale beige colour, and allows the mortar colour to be replicated using sands of approved grade and appropriate colour or the addition of natural earth ochre pigment.

The use of Unilit mortars for the repointing and bedding masonry where repairs, alterations and extensions to the original background are to be undertaken, and the bedding of stone, block and brickwork for new extensions, will ensure the compatibility of the new masonry with the existing structure, minimise differential movement between the two areas and maintain the vapour permeability of the substrate. For new build projects Unilit mortars allow traditional masonry construction to be undertaken without the requirement for expansion joints, and require approximately one day additional setting time compared to cementitious mortars, dependant on site conditions, ensuring the build rate can normally be maintained.

Unilit mortars are traditional lime mortars having been produced from naturally occurring limestone deposits, have no cement content and have a high free lime content resulting in a slow carbonation set ensuring the flexibility and vapour permeability of the mortar are maximised, and the final strength of the mortar will be compatible with historic backgrounds. The initial set of Unilit mortars enables further construction to be undertaken and only requires approximately one day additional setting time compared to cementitious mortars, dependant on site conditions. Unilit will allow construction to a considerable scale without the requirement for expansion joints when used as mortar, plaster and render.

Unilit Natural hydraulic lime mortars, premixed or site prepared with UNILIT FEN-XA and the selected additives, have the following technical benefits:

The characteristic pore structure of a hydraulic lime mortar creates waterproofing properties, preventing rain and capillary water from saturating the substrate, while maintaining the buildings’ permeability to water vapour. In climates where rain and frost are prevalent, hydraulic lime mortars considerably enhance the durability of the structure preventing common failures of spalling pointing mortar and de-bonding render.

The hydraulic reaction within the mortar allows application on damp and salt laden backgrounds without detriment to the mortar or background. The open pore structure of a hydraulic lime mortar creates cavities in which ice and salt crystals can expand without undermining the stability of the mortar. The risks of damage by frost or due to salt crystallisation are thereby virtually eliminated. The low salt content of the hydraulic lime binder restricts the formation of efflorescence on or beneath the surface. The stability and controlled reactions within the mortar prevent the high levels of free lime present being dissolved, and therefore ensures excellent carbonation properties, and prevents the unsightly effects of lime leaching or lime bloom.

The slower setting and strengthening of the hydraulic lime mortar creates a tolerance of flexibility, while the structure settles. Cracking resultant from the settlement of differing elements is greatly reduced, while the early strength of the mortar is wholly sufficient to absorb the stresses created in a masonry structure. This enhanced flexibility, promotes a more durable structure, which will seldom suffer from structural settlement cracking either in the short or long term. The properties characteristic of a hydraulic lime mortar limit the formation of shrinkage cracks. A hydraulic lime pointing mortar will remain stable throughout its life, providing long term protection against damp penetration of the masonry and preventing the formation of salts or frost behind the pointing mortar which are the most common cause of pointing failure and damage to the façade.


Unilit 1320
A mortar based on natural hydraulic lime and silica sand producing an ideal granulometric curve (Füller curve). Designed for the restoration of old masonry and brickwork and as a mortar for laying stone, block or brick in new construction.
The natural composition of Unilit 1320 limits the soluble salts content in the mortar which in turn reduces the efflorescence and lime bloom on the surface of the masonry. The materials are extremely flexible and simple to use.

Preparation: The substrate must be clean and free of all traces of oil and grease. When the substrate has been treated with an impregnating product (silicones or similar) it is recommended to consult the supplier or manufacturer.
Application: Mix Unilit 1320 with clean water – 4.5 to 5.25 litres of water to 30 kg of powder depending on the temperature and substrate. Mix with either a concrete mixer or mechanical whisk for a sufficient duration to achieve a creamy consistency which will be naturally light and viscous. Apply by trowel to the desired bed depth. Avoid overworking the face of the mortar and do not steel trowel finish, or strike the face of the mortar with a pointing iron, which would close off the pore structure. Allow approximately 1-2 days before brushing the mortar down with a stiff bristle brush to reveal the aggregate and give a weathered finish.
Unilit 1320 can be applied to damp but not saturated backgrounds, dampen down excessively dry backgrounds or masonry prior to application. Do not use mortar if the substrate has been saturated by rainfall, as this will affect the bond and weatherproofing of the mortar. Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C. Protection must be provided in conditions of excess heat or drying winds as well as from frost for 48 to 72 hours.

Unilit 30.
A dry, premixed mineral stabilising mortar based on hydraulic, naturally pure and selected lime. Designed particularly for situations where rising damp or capillary action is prevalent, the mortar is characterised by a high plasticity, slow but strong bonding and a low salt content. Unilit 30 is impermeable to water but very vapour permeable and can also be used as an undercoat or as a finishing coat as part of a Unilit plaster or render system. The mortar can be applied to damp walls of buildings and cellars and for repointing or rebuilding walls below ground level retaining walls, and areas exposed to high levels of salt and/or damp, including chimney stacks and parapet walls and coping stones.

For the waterproof performance to be achieved the minimum thickness (depth of pointing) of Unilit 30 must be 20mm, and the minimum mortar bed depth must be 12mm.

Unilit 35.
A traditional, dry, premixed mineral mortar based on hydraulic, naturally pure and selected lime, characterised by a high plasticity, slow but strong bonding and a low salt content. Unilit 35 coarse mortar is produced using the optimum grade of aggregates (fuller curve) with a 3mm maximum granulation ensuring the ease of use, consistency and overall performance of the mortar. Designed for the restoration of old masonry and brickwork and as a mortar for laying stone, block or brick in new construction.
The natural composition of Unilit 35 limits the soluble salts content in the mortar which in turn reduces the efflorescence and lime bloom on the surface of the masonry. The materials are extremely flexible, very vapour permeable and simple to use.

Unilit 45.
A traditional, dry, premixed mineral finishing mortar based on hydraulic, naturally pure and selected lime, characterised by a high plasticity, slow but strong bonding and a low salt content. For ashlar stonework or where mortar joints are tight, less than 4mm, we recommend the mortar is produced using Unilit 45 pre-mixed mortar, maximum granulation 0.7mm.

Unilit FEN-XA.
A pure natural hydraulic lime binder designed to be gauged with the correct volume and quality of sand and water to produce a mortar for a variety of applications, including traditional and modern masonry work, re-pointing, backing layers in plasterwork and renders, finishing applications for both renders and lime washes as well as in floor screeds and lime concretes.

It is not permitted to add clinker, cement or any other synthetic binder.

The binder is mixed on site with the selected additives, such as sand and natural pigments, to create a mortar to suit the specific application. The use of sand with an optimum grain size is important (ideally according to the Füller-curves, with a maximum grain size of 4 mm) but the Unilit FEN-XA binder allows the use of sand which does not exactly meet these theoretical requirements.

Unilit FEN-XA conforms to European Standard ENV 495-1, NHL 2, 3.5, 5 for natural hydraulic lime mortars.

Application: Mix Unilit FEN-XA with a well-graded, pure and clean aggregate – 380-450 kg of binder per m3 of sand – 1:3 Unilit Fen X A: sand of approved grade Percentage of binder to sand: %. (20-25% of binder will produce a coarse mortar; 25-30% of binder will produce a fine mortar).
Binder/sand dry mixture to be mixed with approx. 28% of clean water to produce a working consistency. Mix mechanically for 5-8 minutes in a conventional mixer or with a high speed paddle.

Unilit Fen X can be applied to damp but not saturated backgrounds, dampen down excessively dry backgrounds or masonry prior to application. Apply by trowel to the desired bed depth.
